Why do people create a Blog
When we first started our short term rental business with our smart cottage (click the link to read our journey), creating a website, much more creating a Blog never even crossed my mind. We are new cottage owners and really have no idea where and how to start the rental business, that a blog is the last thing in our to do list.
Fast forward 5 years later, I wished I have started sooner. But it is never too late to start something new specially if it is something that can tremendously help your business moving forward.
Some people create a blog as a way to showcase their hobby. Some simply just enjoy writing and sharing their ideas, life stories to everybody. But most people create a blog to make money! I know that now.
No matter what your passion is, or what I learned as a “niche”, more and more people have created a blog mainly to make some sort of money. And why not, a lot of them out there are really making a living out of it.
And if you are like us, have a short term or a full time business already in the works, creating a blog now is your next best route. You must capitalize on the fact that blogging is a must to get that extra push a business owner needed.
Why am I blogging now
A friend of mine asked a question on my blogging, why do you have to blog now? I have an agency that takes care of my bookings. I am getting the revenue I wanted in the first place. That is, to get our cottage rented for at least 6 weeks in the summer to cover our maintenance expenses and a portion of our mortgage.
A very legitimate question if you ask me. And most likely that will be the same question you are going to throw at me. But wouldn’t it be nice if one day, you will be your own boss and getting all the revenue to yourself? Without having to give up a hefty percentage to a third party agency to get the renters for you? 25% is a big number for me. Not including the money we have to cough up for our cleaners and grounds keepers.
Your vacation rental property could be way ahead of ours in terms of revenue. But I am pretty sure, you are also feeling the burn that maintaining your cottage entails. I think it is a money pit.
Every single rental season, there is something that needs to be done. The deck needs a new stain, we need a new lawn chairs because the renters from last year broke one of the chairs. Some water toys went missing, water pump need to be replaced. And the list goes on and on.
To be honest, blogging now gives me a new outlet. My new BFF. I can rant forever and my blog will not complain. Will not get tired of my whining. It’s a relief to be able to release some of your frustrations. It’s healthy. My new therapist is born!
How to get started on blogging
So whatever it is you are into nowadays, get into the business of blogging. It will help your business in more ways you can even imagine. Your audience needed you and they are waiting for you!
You do not have to start with a bang. But you need to start somewhere. A lot of people will tell you these to start blogging:
- A domain name
- A website hosting company
- A website
While they are absolutely correct, you do not have to spend a dime at this point just to get started. I am into testing the waters first at all times. Most website or ironically speaking, a blog will direct you to a hosting affiliate link, which may offer you a starting plan for a low cost.
Sometimes it is a good idea to start with a low overhead expense to start on something yo are not familiar with yet. But how about FREE sounds like to you?
Yes, I started with a free domain name and a free website with free hosting! And since you will be blogging, your best choice will be a WordPress website. Only because WordPress is more geared towards blogging. It is basically a plug and play platform. No need to pay a pricey web developer. And you do not need to be super techy.
So this is what I used. Site Rubix is free to start. You get a free domain, website and is hosted free. they have an easy step by step guide on how to get your site up and running in no time.
While I have started for free with Site Rubix, I have since moved my hosting to a paid but cheaper option at SiteGround. A more professional site with your own domain is still a better web presence if you are to take your business to the next level.
Do I make money blogging
In my second month of blogging (I started in February 2018), I honestly have not made a dime yet. And I am not ashamed of it. Why? Because I have accomplished something monumental. Most people who wanted to start blogging for their business thought that they are going to see the results right away. For the very few talented ones, it may be true.
But I must say, it is not a simple walk in a park. A lot of work is expected of you if you want to see the fruits of your labor. Sometimes I can’t help but think, this is such a waste of my time. I am not cut out to be a writer. I am not a good story teller. I am just not that good at this whole blogging thing!
As an aspiring full time business owner (It feels great just thinking about it), I must continue. And I am going to continue with my goal of one day owning my short term rental business full time.
But before the money starts pouring in by means of this blog, I know that I have to continue making it worthwhile for people to come back. If I have no audience, it is just not possible. Keep that as a golden rule. Blogging as your business means, you must deliver a product that is worthwhile for your clients. And with every blog, your readers are your clients.
So to keep them coming back, again and again, be prepared to offer something good. A worthwhile read. Be profitable by doing a simple and yet must be a well thought blog post. And for sure the money will be there. Patience is virtue.
Remember, in this business, a good exposure is key. Someone must know you have a short term vacation rental or whatever. Let it be known to everyone. Friends, family, co-workers. They all know for sure. But what about the rest of the world. Do they know?
Start blogging now. It is not too late. You have nothing to lose but everything to gain. Money is out there to be had. Unfortunately though, it will not be handed to you in a silver platter. Take that computer or laptop of yours into good work. Start telling your own story.
Get seen and be heard now. It is not too late for you. It might even be the perfect time. Right here, right now.
